From Special Forces to Corporate Success: Bobby Land’s Journey of Self-Discovery

Transitioning from the military to civilian life is one of the biggest challenges veterans face. For many, the structure, mission, and purpose they found in service feel difficult to replicate in the corporate world. Bobby Land, a retired U.S. Army Green Beret, understands this journey firsthand. After 30 years in Special Operations, he found himself at a crossroads: What’s next?

Through The Honor Foundation (THF) and Vector Accelerator, Bobby embraced the deep work of self-reflection that helped him find a fulfilling new career. Now a Product Innovation Manager at Carrington Mortgage Holdings, he’s proof that veterans can successfully transition with clarity and confidence.

Realizing the Need for Change

For Bobby, the transition wasn’t just about finding a job—it was about finding himself. “My entire adult life was spent in Special Operations and at war; it’s all I had ever known,” he shared. Like many veterans, he initially assumed his post-military path would be in government work. “I thought I had to go into a three-letter agency, sit at a desk, and just disappear into the system,” he said.

It wasn’t until his wife confronted him with a tearful realization that he saw the impact of his uncertainty. “She looked at me and said, ‘You’re going to be one of them. I can see it on you,’” Bobby recalled. “She meant I was going to be one of those veterans who gets out and just fades away.”

The Power of Deep Reflection

Instead of blindly taking the next available job, Bobby took a step back to understand what truly mattered to him. Programs like The Honor Foundation and Vector Accelerator helped him explore the deeper questions:

  • What do I value most in a career?
  • What kind of work excites me?
  • How can I apply my military experience in new ways?

He realized that his passion wasn’t just about leadership—it was about problem-solving and strategy. “I love when people knock on my door and say, ‘Hey CSM, can I run something by you?’ That’s where I thrive—helping others find solutions,” he explained.

Finding the Right Fit

Bobby ultimately found his place at Carrington Mortgage Holdings, where he was given the freedom to build something new. “One day, my boss asked me, ‘What do you know about homeowners insurance?’” Bobby laughed. “I said, ‘I pay for it.’” That conversation led to him leading a major innovation project, proving that his skills in mission execution, leadership, and adaptability were just as valuable in the corporate world.

Key Takeaways for Veterans

âś… Self-awareness is key – Take time to reflect on what truly matters before jumping into a new role.
âś… Your skills are transferable – Problem-solving, leadership, and adaptability are valuable in every industry.
âś… Culture matters – Find an environment where you can thrive, not just survive.
âś… Network intentionally – “The ‘50 Cups of Coffee’ strategy changed my life,” Bobby shared. Conversations open doors.
âś… Trust the process – “Be comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s where growth happens,” Bobby advised.
